CARMAN MOORE is a composer with performances by the N.Y. Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony, and Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center among his many credits. He served as the first new music critic for New York’s renowned Village Voice in the 1960s and ’70s. Mr. Moore created the libretto for Alvin Singleton’s music drama TRUTH. He has created libretti for 3 Bre’r Rabbit-themed operas by Nkeiru Okoye. Moore was a founder of The Society of Black Composers. He has composed such works as WILDFIRES AND FIELD SONGS ( N.Y. Philh), GOSPEL FUSE (S.F. Symphony), MADIBA—honoring Nelson Mandela—-(the American Composers Orchestra), and MASS FOR THE 21st CENTURY, commissioned by Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. In 2010 his CONCERTO FOR ORNETTE was premiered by the New Juilliard Ensemble orchestra. He has taught at Yale University, Queens and Brooklyn Colleges, New School University, and Carnegie-Mellon University. His operatic works GIRL OF DIAMOND MOUNTAIN (2021) and EMBRACING THE ROOT (in-progress) he has created with Danish singer/playwright Lotte Arnsbjerg.
Carman Moore was chosen Guggenheim Fellow in 2013 and Composers Now Visionary Composer of 2020.
